Sister Wilson was a member of the Royal Australian Navy Nursing Service
(RANNS) established in 1942. There were never more than 60 members and they worked in naval hospitals at bases around Australia. Because of the nature of naval warfare, RAN nurses often nursed burns patients.
Trainees receive instruction in the use of a stirrup pump from a Chief Petty officer of the Royal Australian Navy during their training course at the WRANS officers’ training school, Flinders Naval Depot, Victoria, 23 January 1943. Mary Howard (Butler) is pushing the pump.
